Photography

Did you know that anyone who owns a camera is a photographer? Not really, but they think they are. Most folks take “snapshots”, not “photographs”. So what’s the difference? This story is dated but still drives home the point. Before I started using a digital camera, I was photographing a wedding using my wonderful Nikon F5 camera. Top of the line! I just had it cleaned and serviced and it was working better than it ever. After shooting a roll for pre-wedding photos, I put a brand new roll in, set folks up for the formals and . . . nothing happened. Camera stopped working! I tried everything short of a big hammer. This was turning into a very bad day, a photographer’s NIGHTMARE! Remember I just had this camera serviced; therefore I had no reason to carry a backup camera. Yep. . you guessed it; I didn’t bring a second camera.  Well now I had to tell the Bride and Groom that I was dead in the water. With no backup! After a few minutes of panic I asked for their point and shoot cameras. I put film in them and started shooting the formals. I wasn’t contracted to go to the reception, so afterward the formals, I gave the Bride and Groom their cameras, all the film and told them how sorry I was and said NO CHARGE! A few weeks later the bride calls to tell me that they just got the photos back and they were beautiful. They loved them! She said she had no idea their cameras could take such wonderful photos. At the risk of sounding rude, I told her the camera had nothing to do with it, but the person behind the camera. You have to know what to shoot and how to shoot it. How the frame a photo and how to work with light. A photograph you frame, look into the background and think about what you’re about the photograph. A “picture” you just point and shoot, hence . . . point and shoot camera.

Also remember, Uncle Harry may have a very nice camera and may consider himself a good photographer, and he may very well be. You may even consider having him photograph your event. But he wants to have fun, talk to family and friends, maybe even have a few drinks. If you hire a Professional Photographer they are there to capture the images that you’ve hired then to get. Not to get caught up in conversation and miss those WOW photographs. Or have a few drinks and start partying. If you hire Good Intent Graphics to “photograph” your event, I have one heck of a good time, I have fun, and I don’t drink while I’m working.
